HISTORY
Scorrano arises on a hill’s west side and it’s 100 metres above sea level..
We don’t know why the village arises in this area but we think that it was above all because of a miltary factor.
His Roman origin is connected with the Roman consul Marco Emilio Scauro. In this area we have a lot of arcaeological sites which testify the human presence from the Neolithic Age to the Modern Age. This kind of archaeological sites are, for example, the menhir “Cupa”, the cave “Pecorara” and a lot of graves.
In the Middle Ages, Scorrano was under the Suevian domination until 1268 when it was granted as war booty to Carlo D’Angiò. We also know that in the 1400 the feud was under Buzio De Tolomei’s domination.
Scorrano also took part in the Otanto’s war against Turkey (to testify this event there are a lot of bullets that are situated near Santa Dominica’s column and near the city hall).
We know that after in Scorrano were build a lot of holy buldings as Cappuccini’s convent and also a lot of mansions as Veris and Frisari ones.
For these reasons, today Scorrano is one of most interesting village of Salento.
